    Book Description:

This is a must read for anyone who was, is, or will be an American soldier, and for those that care about them.

Paul E. Perrone joined the United States Air Force to serve his country, but at the same time knew the benefits offered by the military were a bonus. After all, he could continue his education as well as gain valuable experience that would aid him when he re-joined the civilian world.

Even though an opportunity existed, he did not attempt to shirk his duty when the Gulf War erupted and his unit was deployed overseas to take part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, putting his life on the line to ensure the success of the fight for freedom.

When he returned home and began to experience health concerns that were seemingly related to his stretch in the desert, he never imagined the benefits he would receive would require being stonewalled in every direction by policies of denial, cover-up, and outright harassment. He diligently attempted to force recognition and treatment of the medical issues he, and others, encountered as a direct result of their service.

A timely and ongoing story, "Toy Soldier" reveals new facets to the difficulties faced by many veterans when it comes time to claim their rightful dues.

    About the Author:

Sergeant Paul Edward Perrone was born in Methuen, Massachusetts. Sergeant Perrone graduated from Methuen High School in 1983 and afterward worked corporate, industrial, and hospital security. He joined the US Air Force in 1986 and excelled receiving his first medal for "ceaseless efforts above and beyond the normal call of duty" just several months after basic training.

Sergeant Perrone holds certification from the US Air Force as a law enforcement specialist and also as a medical material specialist and before being deployed to the Persian Gulf had completed work toward a degree in criminal justice. He has received many awards and decorations including the Air Force Achievement Medal, credit for two overseas tours of duty, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, South West Asia Service Medal, two Outstanding Unit Awards, and he is a small arms expert.

Since his retirement from the military in August 1992, Sergeant Perrone has twice testified before Congress on the issue of Gulf War Syndrome and currently, he receives Veterans Administration compensation for service connected disabilities of, chronic fatigue, asthma, and sinusitis. In addition, he is followed by civilian providers for multiple sclerosis. He has spent many hours helping other veterans navigate this system so as to receive the proper care and compensation for their service connected disabilities. Additionally, he volunteers his time and resources to many community services and programs. He has worked with the elderly, veterans' groups, and school children just to name a few. For over fifteen years he has used his status as the owner of Double Whammy Karaoke and Disc Jockey Service to provide affordable entertainment to those who would otherwise have to do without. He has been called upon to speak at local schools to ensure our young people know the full effects of war and appreciate our veterans' sacrifices.

    Why I do it:
Well, Paul, I for one have to tell you that the children are still talking about your talk. You were fantastic. The best social studies teacher at St. Monica came up to me especially to talk about you today. She was so impressed, and thanked me for getting YOU! I took a great video of you and Karen says she is going to air it next week. Cool. I hope you like it. Sister Julie told me yesterday that she couldn't get over how well spoken you were and that the children all loved you. She also said that now that she knows you and mentions you, others know you already for being in the paper and at the library... Thanks again. I will go to the store and get one of those signed copies and when I see you, you can personalize it for me. Thanks again. Kathleen Corey Rahme.
